The Winchester Mystery House, in San Jose, California, was built by the heir to the Winchester Rifle fortune. Paranoid that angry spirits killed by the rifles would haunt her, Sarah Winchester began a bizarre architecture project that would not be completed until she finally died 38 years later. Sarah would wake up in the morning and enter a séance room, where she believed “good” spirits would give her instructions on how to build the house to ward of the angry ones, and then she would give the plans to carpenters and architects she kept in her employ to implement. This went on for nearly four decades, and turned the house into a bizarre architectural marvel, filled with maze like stairs and hallways that led to nowhere in order to ward off the bad spirits. The 160 room house has some surprisingly modern touches for a mansion built during its era, including button operated gas lights, three elevators, and 47 fireplaces. Visitors can experience the mansion for themselves and see if they get as lost as Sarah hoped the spirits would, or possibly have a close encounter with a ghost themselves. The Winchester Mystery House has been the site of many strange stories and sightings, many supposedly of Sarah herself, who many believe never left the house. And if you aren't too afraid, you can take the Winchester Mystery House Flashlight tour, which is held periodically during the month of October and whenever a Friday the 13th happens. Take a dark and creepy tour through the possibly haunted mansion armed with only a flashlight... if you dare. The Winchester Mystery House is open every day of the year except Christmas, and their tour every day starts at 3:00 PM, so get there in time to be spooked out of your mind by this bizarre and wonderful mansion. A town in the middle of the desert devoted to outrageous excess, there is probably not a weirder place in America than Las Vegas, when you really think about it. And true to it's reputation, Sin City has some of the oddest travel destinations in America. One of the entertainers long associated with Vegas was the flamboyant, “perenial bachelor,” nudge nudge, wink wink, Liberace, who has his own museum dedicated to him in Vegas. Check out Liberace museum to see a collection of his outrageous stage costumes, including his purple royal cape, and his equally outrageous car collection, including his gold studded convertible. He was so successful, I wonder why he never married? And if you're looking for more interesting yet weird Vegas history, I've got the place for you. Have you ever wondered where those giant, flashing, neon signs that are attached to every building in Vegas go when they are retired? They're sent to the Neon Boneyard, part of the planned Vegas Neon Museum. Take a walking tour through the boneyard to catch a glimpse of giant pieces of Sin City history. Walk past a fifteen foot Silver Slipper, a giant genie lamp, and even a towering pool player and feel dwarfed by Sin City history that goes back more than 60 years. 10 of the most famous neon signs have been fully restored and shimmer during the night in downtown Vegas, as part of the Fremont Street Experience. Trips through the Boneyard are by reservation only, so call ahead for a tour. The mysterious and prehistoric Stonehenge in England is one of the world's most fascinating locations, so fascinating that many Americans have attempted to recreate their own versions in the US. Railroad exec Sam Hill had a scale model Stonehenge built in Maryhill, Washington, as a World War 1 memorial which was started in 1918 and took 12 years to complete. Nuberg, Georgia's “Georgia Guidestones” were paid for by a mysterious man with a fake name, “RC Christian,” who gave 50,000 dollars to a granite company to follow his design instructions. Christian left a model in a shoebox and was never heard from again. Stonehenge II in Kerrville, Texas is a meticulously designed, 60 percent scale replica of the original Stonehenge, and it rests next to replicas of the stone heads from Easter Island. But perhaps quirkiest of all are three stonehenges not made of stone at all. Foamhenge, in Natual Bridge, Virgina took just about a day to sculpt and put together... mostly because it's made of foam. Stonefridge in Santa Fe, New Mexico took nine years to complete, and is made up of 200 refrigerators stacked 18 feet high in a circle. And perhaps strangest of all is Carhenge, in Alliance, Nebraska. 38 broken down cars were rescued from the junkyard and turned into a surral stonehenge recreation. The cars have been pained a flat gray in order to look more like the original, and Carhenge is now made up of 100 percent American vehicles. Two foregin cars were recently replaced by modles built in Detroit, while the centerpiece “Heel Stone” is a 1962 Cadillac. That's a way to get more mileage out of a busted down vehicle. The larger than life Jesus at the Mormon visitor's center in Salt Lake City Utah comes complete with the belief that Jesus visited the area after his resurrection, an American pitstop not covered by any other Christian texts. Christ of the Deep in Key Largo, Florida, is a nine foot tall Christ statue that is sunken in 25 foot deep water, and it's a popular site for underwater weddings. Only in Florida. And a 62 foot tall Jesus explodes from the dirt from his waist up at the Solid Rock Church in Monroe, Ohio. But the most impressive American Jesus statue is probably The Christ of the Ozarks, in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. The behemoth, seven story, two million pound Christ is described as the “world's tallest Uncrucified Jesus,” and he stands vigil outside of a giant amphitheater, where a four hour nightly Passion Play pays tribute to the big J. The statue was completed in 1966, and according to the Chuch's “Story of the Building of the Great Statue,” each wrist can support the weight of up to three cars without any damage. The Burt Reynolds and Friends Museum in Jupiter, Florida is located near his boyhood home and features a lifesize Reynolds cutout that looks so much like the actor that you might ask it for an autograph. The museum is filled with awards that Reynolds won, including his six consecutive Favorite Male Motion Picture Actor awards he collected from 1979- 1984. Memorabilia from his films litters the museum, including the unlucky canoe from “Deliverance,” and Burt's automotive costar from “Smokey and the Bandit.” Posters from all of Reynold's over one hundred films and pictures of Burt with his famous friends line the walls. Reynolds himself helped design the museum, which is housed in a former bank, and according to legend, he even hung many of the pictures and posters himself. The museum's gift shop features enough Burt related schwag to satisfy even the biggest “Cannonball Run” fan. And who knows, maybe you'll get lucky one day and run into the man himself. (Sighs.) Giant monuments to superheroes and mythological characters, recreations of Stonehenge made of old cars, and giant coffee pots...lots of giant coffee pots for some strange reason... litter America's highways. That's why we're going to take a look at some of the most offbeat destinations in America. And nothing says all American quirk quite like a visit to the home of the King of Rock and Roll. That's right, Elvis's Graceland mansion, in Memphis Tennessee. His former home has been converted into a monument to the eccentric super star, with a walking museum tour through his trophy room, shooting range, and car collection. There is even a room dedicated to The King's over the top, sequined jumpsuits he wore on stage. Towards the end of the tour, you can visit his meditation garden, where Elvis himself is buried. Visitors are not allowed upstairs, where The King's bedroom remains untouched since the day of his death. And if you're looking for a place to stay while in Memphis for your Elvis experience, check in to The Heartbreak Hotel, a King inspired boutique right down the road from Graceland. Check out one of their themed suites, including the “Graceland Suite,” designed to feel like you are living in the mansion, the art deco Hollywood suite which tips a hat to Elvis's movies, or the Gold and Platinum suite, themed after Elvis's musical triumphs. And if you're feeling frisky, check in for two to the Burning Love room, named after The King's 1972 hit and meant to make you feel like a romantic idol on the level of Elvis himself. 65 million years ago dinosaurs roamed the Earth, but you can still catch a glimpse of these giant beats... as concrete and wooden roadside attractions. Multiple “dinosaur parks” are still littered throughout the US countryside, attracting curious tourists with their awe inspiring size, and sometimes comically unscientific look. Rapid City, South Dakota's Dinosaur Park is at the top of the hill and features large scale dinos that have a more cartoonish than accurate look to them. These replica prehistoric beasts have been overlooking Rapid City for over 70 years. For forty years, sculptor E.V. Nelson has been crafting dinos with surreal colors at the Prehistoric Gardens in Port Orford, Oregon, which is located in a genuine American rain forest. Fellow dino crafter Jeff “Fish” Wells has been making the creatures since 1981 at the Wells Dinosaur Haven in Uncasville, Connecticut. His proudest creation is a full scale T-Rex made from a submarine hull, and the Rex rocks out with oversized mandolin held in it's arms and mouth. And how could you expect to find quirky American attractions in small towns without running into a little religious fanaticism along with your dinos? At the Dinosaur Gardens Prehistoric Gardens Zoo in Ossineke, Michigan, visitors are greeted by a statue of Jesuss. Then those brave enough to enter the over 70 year old so called zoo will walk through a historically inaccurate yet well crafted display of dinos interacting with cavemen. At the end of your tour, enter the belly of a Apatosaurus statue, where you'll find a heart shaped Jesus inside. And the two dinos known as the Cabazon Monsters in Cabazon, California have recently had their own Christian conversion. Located in the middle of the desert and clearly visible from the highway, Dinny, the Apatosaurus and his unnamed T-Rex neighbor took a decade each to build and became pop culture icons in the 80s, appearing in “Pee Wee's Big Adventure,” “The Wizard,” and various commercials. They were recently purchased by a fundamentalist group who replaced all the scientific dino information in the gift shop located in Dinny's belly with anti evolution propaganda. Which is ironic, because the anti evolution info is inside a dinosaur, which does not appear in the bible. Don't think about it too hard. We've been talking about offbeat American vacation pit stops, and the historic town of Deadwood, in the Black Hills of South Dakota, doesn't get anymore offbeat or American. The hisorical site where Wild Bill Hicock died and Calamity Jane spent time living in was a den of sin during the old West. As depicted in the highly acclaimed HBO series “Deadwood,” the town was full of cursing, fighting, corruption, hookers, gambling, and lots and lots of drinking. Which is why the modern “gambling halls” which fill Deadwood's 200 year old buildings with slot machines and table games are not disrespectful to the town's history, but actually completely accurate to it. The many wild parties in Deadwood, such as their Mardi Gras and St. Patrick's Day weekends, are the stuff of drinking legend. And if you're travelin' with the young 'uns, there's still plenty of non R-rated fun to be had in Deadwood. The town features multiple historical museums and the Mount Moriah Cemetary, where Wild Bill himself rests. Deadwood is also conveniently close to Mount Rushmore, if you feel like taking a day trip to see the faces of some dead presidents. But if you want to visit a place that reminds you why they called it the “wild” west, Deadwood is the place to drop in. Just make sure you drink some strong whiskey if you want to fit in. High society members Andrew and Abby Borden were found murdered in their home in Fall River, Massachusetts in August of 1892. Both of their skulls had been crushed in, and police thought the hatchet they discovered in the basement was the murder weopon. Their 32 year old daughter, Lizzy Borden, who lived in the house with her parents, was the prime suspect, but she was aqquited and the murders were never solved. Over 100 years after the murders, the scene of the grisly crime has been converted into a quaint, yet macabre, bed and breakfast. When guests arrive, they are greeted by a hatchet with “Welcome” pained on it in blood red. And a darkly funny sign inside cautions “please be careful; we've already had two fatal head injuries in the house.” Photos of the horrifying murder scene are hung in the rooms where they were taken, showing how carefully restored the house has been, and guests love to pose and recreate the gruesome scene. Creepy close encounters like phantom footfall sounds and strangely unnatural wind guts are commonly reported, especially when guests use the Ouija Board in the sitting room. Abby Borden's death room, where her body was discovered, in the most popular room in the B and B. It was auctioned off for over 400 dollars on the night of the murder's anniversary this year. And the adjacent Borden Carriage house has been converted into a gift shop which sells hatchet shaped soaps, key chains, and earrings, while grusome Lizzie Borden bobbleheads sell like hot cakes. Check in to this gloriously tasteless and creepy B and B if you dare, but good luck getting a good night's sleep there. Perhaps a better idea is that some of the cruise ships allow you to purchase a soft drink card for about thirty bucks and with that card your child can purchase all they can drink. Most ships have stabilizers you can still feel the boat rocking especially at night when the boat picks up speed while most passengers are tucked away in there beds. You have several options. A doctor can give you a prescription for a patch that will last the whole time. You can also take one a day Dramamine or Bonine. If it makes you sleepy just take it at night instead of in the morning. If you don't like taking medicine you can purchase wristbands that prevent seasickness through pressure points on your wrist. Ginger tea has also been known to calm sea sickness. If a cup of hot tea isn’t the best thing on a Caribbean cruise try taking a couple of Ginger tablets morning and night. It's not only supposed to prevent seasickness but is also supposed to help your food digest. It's available at your drug store in the vitamin section. Hi, I'm Liesel Hlista and today we are going to leave all the other tourists behind as we east to London's East End. Once known for its jellied eel, cockney slang, dock workers, and immigrants, the East End was decimated by Nazi's bombs during the Second World War. Never a region to say die, the area was built up anew and has transformed itself into a unique blend of a new wave of immigrants, new development and hipster artsy types who choose to call the place home. Any trip east should start at Brick Lane. Less than a mile away from the Tower of London, Brick Lane has served as the first British home for many an immigrant and today is home to many Bangladeshis. You can buy fruit and fabrics from street vendors or just enjoy the sights and smells. Brick Lane's walls also serve as the canvas for some of the world's most best graffiti artists. It was also a location on a Killer's video as well as being a setting in Rushdie's 'Satanic Verses'. What do Dickens , Conrad, and the creators of the hit film '28 Weeks Later' have in common? They all were intrigued enough by the Docklands to set some of their work there. The Docklands is a section of the East End that has seen blazing development in the last 20 years, eschewing warehouses for commercial towers, luxury flats and upscale shopping. Canary Wharf is the epicenter of this growth and houses Canary Wharf Tower, the tallest building in all of England. The Wharf also provides world-class shopping in the form of a beautiful shopping mall and waterfront shops. Loads of new developments are in the works, so stay tuned.
